When I started looking at going back to school in my 40s, I did not have four years to spare. Most women I hear from are in the same position. They need something fast that leads to real work.
Certificate programs are the answer. Many can be completed in under a year, qualify for grant funding, and lead directly into a job market that actively needs you.

1. Phlebotomy Technician (4 to 6 Months)
Phlebotomists draw blood for tests, transfusions, and donations. Training at most community colleges costs under $2,000 and WIOA often covers the full cost. Hospitals, clinics, and blood donation centers are always hiring.
2. CNA Certified Nursing Assistant (4 to 12 Weeks)
CNA training is the fastest way into healthcare. In as little as four weeks, you can get certified and start working in nursing homes, hospitals, and home health. Most state workforce agencies cover CNA training through WIOA.
3. Medical Billing and Coding (9 to 18 Months)
One of the best programs for women who want to work from home. Medical billers and coders process insurance claims and can often work remotely after gaining experience. The Pell Grant covers it at FAFSA-eligible schools.
4. HVAC Technician (6 to 12 Months)
One of the highest-paying short-term programs available. Heat and air conditioning technicians are in constant demand. WIOA frequently covers HVAC training. Some utility companies offer apprenticeships that pay you while you train.
5. Welding (7 to 10 Months)
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects strong demand for welders through 2032. Women who enter welding often advance quickly. WIOA covers welding at most trade schools and community colleges.
6. Pharmacy Technician (6 to 12 Months)
Pharmacy techs work in drugstores, hospitals, and specialty pharmacies. Many large pharmacy chains hire externs during training and offer full-time positions when you pass your certification exam.
7. IT Support and CompTIA A+ (3 to 9 Months)
The CompTIA A+ certification is the industry entry point for IT support work. WIOA covers many bootcamp and community college IT programs because employer demand is so high.
8. Dental Assistant (9 to 12 Months)
Dental assistants work alongside dentists and hygienists. Most dental offices hire from their externship pool, so completing a reputable program often leads directly to a job offer.
9. CDL Truck Driver (3 to 6 Months)
CDL training is one of the fastest paths to a $50,000+ starting salary. Many freight companies actively recruit women and offer paid training programs in exchange for a short employment commitment.
10. Early Childhood Education (6 to 12 Months)
The Child Development Associate (CDA) credential opens doors at preschools, Head Start programs, and childcare centers. State grants and Pell Grant funding are commonly available for these programs.
How to Pay for These Programs
For programs at FAFSA-eligible community colleges, file the FAFSA first. The Pell Grant alone may cover everything. For shorter programs not at FAFSA-eligible schools, contact your local American Job Center about WIOA training funds.
